What are PMU
Foals?
 Premarin
or PMU (PREgnant MARe urINe) foals are mere by-products of
the Hormone Replacement Therapy drug Premarin® that is prescribed to women in
menopause or who have had hysterectomies. This drug is made from the urine of
approximately 60,000 pregnant mares (female horses) and their foals are usually
shipped to slaughterhouses for their meat, which is marketed overseas to
European and Asian countries for human consumption. When the mares can no longer
conceive they too are generally shipped for slaughter and replaced on the "pee
lines". These horses and foals vary in breed, the majorities are; Paints,
Appaloosas, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Drafts, and crosses of each.
The very concept of this industry is
outrageous. Even the passing interest of those with no connection to animal
rights is stirred by the idea of the slaughter of over fifty thousand baby
horses each year. There are alternatives to this drug and to hormone replacement
therapy. For more information visit

Dunrovin
Ranch works in concert with other PMU rescue facilities bringing foals and
older horses from PMU facilities in Canada. We serve as a drop-off point,
boarding facility, gentling facility, and further transport to permanent homes.
PMU foals and older horses are unique in that they have had from absolutely no
handling to minimal handling, and they need special treatment and understanding,
time and patience to begin to trust the human animal.
Our goal for Dunrovin is to
continue to rescue and place PMUs, and to be available to assist those who also
save PMU’s from potential slaughter. These fine animals deserve a chance at an
enjoyable life.
Dunrovin
Ranch currently has 15 PMUs, varying in age from 7 months to 14 years. Neither
the mares nor the Percheron stallion we adopted are trained as riding horses.
Our intention is to teach these horses ourselves, using patience, gentleness and
horsmanship, and utilize them as trail riding horses, perhaps in programs for
underprivileged, emotionally needy, abused, and neglected children. We envision
being able, with help and funding, to bring these children to Dunrovin Ranch to
experience the joys of horses and the beauty of our surrounding desert.
A horse can
touch a child in ways no human can. There is unconditional love, trust, peace,
and hope to be shared between those who open their hands and hearts.
